Once, when the blue tulip bloomed
a little caterpillar awoke to the sunrise
and raised half his many legs in greetings
A salute of honor
A silent acknowledgement
of the nurturing warmth
Gratitude requires no words
It is an exercise of the heart
Sometimes I notice
the curl of your neck
or some other tender spot
And I’m reminded
In just that moment
of human vulnerabilities
And the warming of the heart
It’s then the butterflies arise again
And I am prompted to say something
OPEN TO RECEIVE
That man who gives of his heart
was generous right from the start
In kindergarten
he watched out for the other kids
And still his wife knows
how very much he gives
Yet he won’t let anything back
He needs to learn to…
